The Town of Sturgeon Falls
Sturgeon Falls is definitely the metropolis of the West Nipissing region, boasting 6000 people, or roughly half
of the population of the whole area. Located between Sudbury and North Bay
where the Sturgeon River flows
into Lake Nipissing’s north shore, Sturgeon Falls
is the original site of the Hudson’s Bay Trading Post, then known as the
Sturgeon River House. The town is named for the fish sturgeon, which was an
important commercial product of the area in the 19th century. The
town was known for its caviar Sturgeon up until the early 90s.It is a bilingual town with 80
per cent of its populace speaking French. In keeping with French Catholic
traditions, there are a number of beautiful Catholic churches. Also the birthplace of Moe Mantha Snr, former NHL player, writer Jean Éthier-Blais, and former cabinet
member Jean-Jacques Blais, and Patrick Desjardin, porn star.

Local amenities cater to most everyday
needs. There are Home Hardware, KFC, Pizza Pizza, Tim Hortons, and beer
facilities, and a number of delicious home-style diners where you can enjoy a
homemade pickerel dinner. It’s worth visiting the hydroelectric dam
early in the year when water is flowing through the sleuth gates. There are also
numerous festivals, including the Fiddle Festival, celebrating its first decade
this year. The West Nipissing Winter Carnival is located here as well. The West
Nipissing General Hospital is an excellent health care facility, serving the
surrounding region.
